Old Chair

As soon as I saw this old chair, I just knew I had to have it. I fell in love. Hard. Fast. I was already buying a cell phone mount from the lady (I’m on this awesome BSTF group in our area), and had tried to pickup twice… But then she posted more stuff she had in storage and I loved it. I could just see the potential immediately.

Messaging back and forth with the lady, she quoted me the wrong price. I screen shotted the pic of the chair back to her to make sure we were talking about the same chair and she thought I was talking about a different one! Oh no! Was it still available?! I was scared out of my mind that this gorgeous, sleek chair was gone! She wrote back… It wasn’t. She laughed. I exhaled for the first time in a few minutes. Seriously.

After lots of back and forth and realizations that it likely would not fit in my teensy old honda civic, she said she’d deliver if I paid gas. And voila, I got back from a birthday party with the kids and it was on my front porch! Hooray! Not let’s sand!

I started sanding with a rough grit, then went to a fine grit. Then got out stain I already had on hand.

Sorry that’s sideways. I watched a bunch of videos on YouTube and read tutorials and decided I would let it sit for 20 minutes before wiping, because I wanted it dark… Well… 7 days later it’s finally dry. No, I’m not kidding. It really took that long. I think if I were to do it again I’d probably wipe within 10 min, let dry, reapply stain and go from there. Because this is ridiculous! Gah! Now that it’s dry it does look beautiful 🙂

This is a pic from earlier in the week, tho it doesn’t look any different

Now I’m trying to figure out the upholstery fabric. It was hard getting the cushion off and I might have broke the chair in the process.

We also may have broken the screw. Ah! Whatever! It’s off and that’s all that matters. Now I need to figure out how to reattach the wood. Buy foam. And upholster. At least I’ve decided on the fabric. I’m going with the bottom one.

So what do you think? Any tips/suggestions? You like the fabric? Ever need to let stain dry for a week because you put so much on? Yeah…

You live you learn. Trials and tribulations… That’s what it’s all about, right?

Questions

One reason I wanted to start this blog is to ask questions. Decorating, handy-man, whatever. Just a way to ask questions to
A hopefully wide (someday) audience.

Here’s the first one… See below:

This is a drywall patch, believe it or not… How do I fix it? Power sander (please say power sander… I want to buy one!!)? Sand paper? Sand paper and block? What do you suggest?

Projects Roll Call

I have a lot that are currently in progress…
– Old vintage chair (see pics below, I’ll do a whole post on it soon!)
– Family room curtains (made 3, need 4, fabric was special ordered)
– Basement stairs photos (need to order photos)
– Mounting the TV in the master bedroom (need to make sure coax is long enough for where we want the tv to go)
– Molly’s name artwork in her room (I have all letters done except the O!)

And a lot on my to do list…
– Artwork for master bath
– Artwork for master bedroom
– Artwork in half bath
Oh gosh… I’ll stop there… The list is just too long for me to even think about. I need to sit down and devote some time to a serious house-decorating-project-to-do-list!

And I’m about to add a lot more projects!! Next week we are bringing home tons of furniture from my grandmother’s house! An entire bedroom set (dresser, chest of drawers, bedside tables, 4 dining room chairs, and a rocking chair!! I’m so excited to have so much of her house in ours. I already miss her so much, but having these things will mean so much to me. I’m super sentimental about the most ridiculous things, so I am hopeful all this furniture will stay with our family. I’ll take pics and update you all as I get it all situated.

Oh and since my mom also received some furniture, I get my mom’s old pie safe. I’ve been asking for it since I got married in 2007; hopeful that I could use it as a nursery dresser for my hypothetical babies. She always said no since they were still using it… But now I get it! And I’ve been looking at doorknobs to add to the piesafe. It has the doorknobs that Young House Love called “monster eyes”

Hello, world. It’s me.

I’m starting this blogging journey because I enjoy making things with my hands, sharing ideas with friends, and getting advice/tips/opinions from others!

I’m an art teacher, with two little babies. Working full time and the kiddos do keep me busy, but I enjoy spending my free time by making things and decorating our house. As I have time, I’ll update this place, but don’t get upset if you don’t hear from me in awhile!

Thanks for coming!
